Acrylic on Canvas, 16x20, this is an old painting from 2008 that came back home to me, so I touch her up a bit and included her in my surreal pop art portrait set. The painting speaks for itself, I know it is primitive outsider kind of stuff but this is how I paint. Like most of my surreal pop art portraits, the fiqure is cartoon like and animated but the concept behind the painting is solid and hopefully sends a message to the viewer.

Acrylic on Canvas, 16x20, Recently, an artist friend of mine, a recent BFA grad advised that in lieu of graduate school, she was going to do 200 portraits in two years instead. I thought about it a lot figuring maybe I could teach myself how to paint realistic portraits. Something I've always wanted to do but until now, all my portrait attempts are cartoon like. So here's the first Saturday afternoon effort. I'll have to use reference photo's from fashion magazines, newspapers, old Master paintings & stock images from the internet. This blog is about my journey as an artist, this will be part of that journey. All learning pieces for me, one thing I learned today was that I don't load my brush with enough paint, this will change...my goal, paint realistic portraiture!

Acrylic on Canvas. 18x24, When I was a kid, I use to lay under a big tree that would shade me from the summer sun, I'd look up at the clouds and watch as they changed into different shapes &amp;amp;amp; images as they moved across the sky. Summer Time for a child like me was full of adventure and with time off from school, I'd always seem to find exciting things to do. Even the simplest of things, like watching an ant mound, or finding a birds nest, observing a spider weaving a web or just day dreaming about what I might become when I grew up, was more than enough me! This was the inspiration for this painting. Available as greeting card.

This is a typical traditional house in the town of Boyaca, Columbia. I gave her fair warning that I don't usually paint stuff like this! This piece initially started out as a painting of the lake & dock behind my home. The dock doesn't really go all the way out across the lake. But using artistic license and imagination this painting turned into a Pontoon Bridge jutting across a river like canal, after adding the overhanging trees, which in reality are mango trees, this painting came to life as something that wasn't intended, one of those happy accidents that I'm very pleased with, hope you like it too!

Acrylic on Canvas, 16x20, This painting was one of my first attempts at still life. I found no matter how hard I tried couldn't get the photo realism I'd hoped for. What I got instead was an abstract surreal looking piece, that pushed color complements & broke more than a few compositional rules of design and perspective. The watermelon appears to be floating in suspended animation, as does the cantalope only half grounded on the table. Half of the apple fades away into the darkness. I used black gesso for the background which I'm told should never be done! But I liked it, so I did it anyway! I felt during the painting process that it helped pop the middle & foreground areas. For all that may be right or wrong about this piece, I'm satisfied with the end result. That's the back story behind this painting!

Is Blogging Dead?

Recently, I received a response/critique regarding my Blog site, the viewer advised that more narrative would likely be appreciated by readers on what inspired a given piece of work.

I'm grateful for this readers input and I have to concede, it was not only good advice but also right on target with what an art blog should be all about. My initial purpose for blogging was to share my journey as an artist with others & showcase my work & hopefully in the process make a few bucks with some sales. I've only attempted one prior blog post and still don't know how to add all the bells & whistles, but I do know how to speak from my heart. Going forward I hope to learn how to make this blog a place where like minded people will want to come and visit & exchange ideas. Having said that, I still don't know what Twitter is, I don't have a Facebook/My Space account or know how pay pal works. Someone recently advised I needed all those things connected together and come back to my main page. Perhaps this is true? We shall see. I heard someone say the other day, "blogging is dead", I don't know what he meant by this! Do you?

Yeah, I guess I'm a bit of a dinasaur when it comes to computer stuff, never been in a chat room, haven't figured how to send a text message on my cell phone. My eleven year old grand-daughter looked at me like I was some kind of creature from another planet when she found out I didn't text message people. Enough said on that.

Here's what I do know, a little bit about art & painting and enough common sense to accept that I will never know it all, in short I'm destined to always be a perpetual student. No matter how much I learn or how good my technical skills get going forward, I'm always going to be left wanting. In the coming weeks I'm going to be adding more descriptive narrative to my posted works, making observations and comments on things of artistic interest. Sharing them with my readers, However, I'm aware no matter how good I get at making this blog do what I hoped it would do, if I don't have traffic coming in, It will be like pissing in the wind... but I'm going to do it anyway! Even if I never sell any of my work, I'll still be painting & writing... Why? Because I am an Artist!

That's it for now...time for sleep and hopefully dream of a better tomorrow!

This was my second portrait attempt, another learning piece for me. JoAnn (Jody) was my first love, a very long time ago. She died very young but will never be forgotten. This is my tribute for her and the fond memories that still remain in my heart. I didn't work from a reference, this piece was painted from memory, using artistic license as to what in my minds eye she might have look liked as an older woman. For some unknown reason I worked this piece in a very flat saturated style, don't know why but it doesn't really matter, after all it is an abstract portrait. Like the "Queenbee Portrait" I did a photographic progression video on the making of the JoAnn. Acrylic on Paper, 16x12, NFS, private collection, A couple months ago I had the pleasure of getting some portrait practice using my friend Queenbee's avatar/photo, she was gracious enough to let me try ( Note: I'm not a portrait painter, just exploring and experimenting, always trying to broaden my artistic horizons.) My attempt was designed to try and capture the pose and attitude rather than a likeness. This painting done in a abstract expressionistic style! I used this cool little program called Window's Movie Maker, documenting my progress in various stages from initial sketch to it's present state. Just thought I'd share it with you all. Acrylic on Canvas, 24x30,This piece was one of my most challenging & rewarding paintings. I painted this a couple of years ago, a milestone for me because I'd never attempted a painting this size. I have since done many even larger. This Abstract Floral, was kind of like magic for me though, I painted this from imagination without a reference, just pushing paint around on the canvas, carving out this large hibiscus and surrounding foliage. When it was finished I stood back and smiled!

I initially did this one in watercolor, then when I gave up watercolors and discovered acrylics I re-worked the piece by going right over with watered down acrylic paint to pop the colors more. One of my early works that I'm still quite pleased with...thinking of trying this one again on canvas someday. This piece currently on exhibit at the Broward Housing Solutions Excutive Office in Broward County.

Island Girl was another milestone painting for me in that while I loved it and considered it one of my favorite paintings, no one else seemed to liked it. So it stayed in the corner of the room collecting dust for the longest time and one day I decided to hang it. And every time I walked by it, I'd eyeball it and knew there was something wrong but couldn't quite figure out what. Then one night it became clear, as if a veil had lifted. I realized it wasn't proportionally possible for the her legs to be as long as they were in relation to her body. So I cut off her legs, repositioned her arms, constructed a wall like structure separating her from the tree like plant,added more stars to a very starry night. And was finally comfortable with this abstract, even knowing that she wasn't very pretty and also still cartoon like. I secretly adored her... one problem, no one else thought very highly of it. But, I got the opportunity to exhibit this piece at a local venue one night...and would you believe, "It Sold." The buyer absolutely loved it. The lesson I learned from all this was you never know...what someone thinks is crap another might think it a masterpiece. The woman who bought it sent me a photo showing the painting as the center piece for her living room...Imagine that!

It's kind of art deco, stylized and another painting that just came together magically from imagination. Looking at it now I see glaring flaws such as forgetting to add shadows for the bottom of the pier rails, easy fix but it was also gifted, as many of my learning pieces. But I've received many positive comments on this and I am generally pleased with it even still.

Acrylic on Mason Tile, 13x13, NFS. Never worked on this kind of support before, but I loved it. The roughness of the tile still came through even after using gesso on it twice, gave it kind of a cool looking effect, especially for the sand. Kind of a happy accident. Looking forward to working more pieces on floor tile.

Acrylic on Watercolor Paper, 18x24, NFS, This piece is loosely based on a painting by Ken Howard, titled "Dora and the White Parasol". I used this as a practice in the hope of trying to be looser & more painterly with my work. I used a different color scheme than the original and omitted a few things. I am somewhat pleased with the result, but ... I forced myself too stop fiddling with it. Gift for a dear friend.

Wild Poppies after Monet

Acrylic on paper, thought this one might be fun to show, a couple years back I came across a Monet book and fell in love with this painting, I just had to give it a try. Found it again in an old sketchbook and smiled remembering how proud I was of myself for doing it. My first impressionist attempt, shortly thereafter I tried another, Monet's Japanese Bridge. I'm almost tempted to try it again on canvas just to see the difference in my progress!

Welcome to my blog

I've included a video bar with two video's I made last year using a little program called Window's Movie Maker, anyone running windows can access this program. It is user friendly and for those who don't have a camcorder, anyone can create their own video's in less than one hour. These video's are basically a photographic progression of some of my early works, Two of the videos included are two portraits done in an abstract expressionist style, where my main focus was attempting to capture the pose and attitude, more than a likeness.

Note: Over the next week, I'll be posting some of my work, several of these pieces were included in the video on my video bar, by posting on my blog as well, will allow viewers a closer look and additional information regarding availability.
